From the next room, George heard the initial whimpers of his awakening son. They’d been home for mere minutes, and already the baby was demanding attention. Well, babies are like that, he thought tolerantly. The whimpering stopped, but no wailing cry followed it.

“Was that the baby?” Ellie asked tiredly, her eyes opening for all that she’d only just laid down.

“It was. I’ll go check. You rest.” George turned and walked into the closet converted into a nursery.

Yeri was there already; he had Lee in his arms and was soothing the baby with his purr. He looked up at George. “Just a full diaper, master. He doesn’t seem hungry right now, though that could change at any moment.”

“Have you left this room since we’ve been home?” George raised an eyebrow at his Rovani, who shrugged a shoulder and ducked his head in avoidance. “Yeri, you can’t live in here indefinitely, you know. You have more duties than just minding the baby. Let Marra and Devlin help.”

“He needs me, master. Mistress is so tired, she needs time to recover. I can do this for her. I can give mistress the time she needs.” Yeri met his gaze for a long moment; George saw the determination there.

“I need you, too, Yeri,” George said this softly but pointedly. Yeri was his best friend, his business partner, and his lover. With Ellie needing time to recover—the Rovani was certainly right about that—he had no one to turn to for relief other than Yeri.

Gently, Yeri placed Lee back in the crib. He stroked the little back until the baby settled, pulled the little blanket up over the little shoulders then stepped back very quietly. The baby remained asleep. Yeri turned toward George and proceeded to silently but pointedly push him out of the room. George permitted this, fighting down a grin at his Rovani’s antics. He never would have thought that Yeri would prove to be so protective of the baby. Male Rovania were not known for any sort of nurturing instinct.

Yeri didn’t stop herding him once they were back in the bedroom. He cast a significant glance at the sleeping Ellie before pushing George out the door. In the hallway, he finally asked, “The living room or the office?”

“The basement,” George countered. Devlin had set up a pleasure couch down there at his request. He had been wanting a place to enjoy Yeri without disturbing the rest of the household or chancing being walked in on.

“Yes, master.” Yeri’s face had gone expressionless at the mention of the basement, and George wondered why. But the Rovani turned and started walking before he could decide if he should push the issue or not. George decided to just follow him and see for himself. Yeri wouldn’t be so stoic once he was scent-locked.

Yeri’s stride checked when he saw the new addition to the basement. He glanced back at George then ran his fingers over the supple leather of the couch. George came up behind him and wrapped his arms around Yeri’s torso.
